Fecal Transplant
What is a Fecal Transplant?
A fecal transplant, also known as a fecal microbiota transplant (FMT), involves fecal matter that contains a healthy balance of gut microbes from a donor animal being transferred into the gastrointestinal tract of a recipient animal. The goal of this procedure is to restore or improve the balance of beneficial bacteria in the recipient's gut microbiome.
Benefits of a Fecal Transplant
Fecal transplants can be used to treat a variety of gastrointestinal disorders, such as...
inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
diarrhea
clostridial infections
digestive disorders
Skin Irritations
Immune System Issues
Crohn's Disease
constipation
Ulcerative Colitis
And more!
Fecal Sample Collection
A fecal sample is collected from the donor animal. This sample contains a diverse array of bacteria, viruses, fungi, and other microorganisms that inhabit the donor's gastrointestinal tract.
A healthy animal with a well-balanced gut microbiome is selected as the donor. Donors are screened for diseases, parasites, and other health issues to ensure the safety of the transplant.
Preparation and Administration
The fecal sample is processed to isolate the microbiota from other components such as undigested food particles.
The prepared fecal material is then administered to the recipient animal rectally.
Follow-up
Follow-up evaluations are an important way to assess the effectiveness of the transplant in restoring gut health and improving symptoms.
