This week we wanted to highlight a spicy little guy named Papi Chulo who has had a great recovery. Papi's owner, Sunny, says "He is a turd, but I can't help but love him!"
Papi had a rough beginning. He was found lost after the 2013 tornados in Moore. Papi, along with many other lost pets, were rescued by The Animal Resource Center (ARC). At the time Sunny had lost her own pet, Nova, during the tornado. Nova was found by ARC and was quickly reunited with Sunny. This inspired Sunny to volunteer with ARC. Sunny helped feed the animals in need and clean their kennels. While caring for the pets, she noticed Papi sleeping in his kennel. At the time he was around two years old and very small. He had a label on his cage that said "CAUTION." She later found out that Papi was deemed unfit for adoption due to his aggression. This did not scare Sunny away.
For the next several weeks Sunny worked with Papi. She was patient and allowed him to come out on his own terms. She helped him to come out of his shell and work through some of his food aggression. Papi was always excited to see Sunny, and eventually Sunny fell in love with him. After a month of working with Papi, Sunny adopted him. Papi is still spicy, but also so lovable. We love seeing him!
During Sunny's time volunteering with ARC for tornado relief, she met Dr. Roach who was also volunteering. Dr. Roach has helped Papi with his Luxating patella. A luxating patella is an orthopedic condition in dogs that occurs when the kneecap (patella) moves out of its normal position in the thighbone's groove. Sunny came to Dr. Roach in the hopes of avoiding surgery. Dr. Roach completed prolotherapy for Papi and that helped greatly! Papi is currently 12 years old and is enjoying being his ornery self!
