Titer Testing and Vaccination
Prevention & Health Management
At each visit, we’ll examine your pet from nose to tail, searching for anything out of the ordinary. We’ll then create a customized preventative care strategy to include vaccines, parasite control, nutrition, and weight management, and anything else we deem relevant.
Occasionally, the doctor might also recommend certain health screenings. These routine tests help us identify and address potential health concerns early before they have a chance to develop and worsen.
Titer Testing
Many veterinarians and pet parents have become increasingly wary of the health risks and lack of benefits associated with repeatedly vaccinating pets. As a result, many have opted for a titer test. Titer tests show the actual immune response, not just the attempt to cause an immune response by vaccination.
At Holistic Pet Care Center we are proud to provide titer testing. The parvovirus/distemper titer test for dogs and panleukopenia virus test for cats will help you and others (vets, groomers, kennel owners, etc.) determine if your pet requires additional vaccination, and may save your pet from unnecessary shots. Rabies titers may also be tested, but legally the vaccine will still need to be administered.
Titer Testing VS Vaccination
Before jumping to the conclusion that vaccinating is a much cheaper option than testing, remember that testing can be a rare expense and is no riskier than any other simple blood draw. Over-vaccination, on the other hand, can potentially cause a lifetime of illness with a wide range of health problems consisting of anything from fever to anaphylactic shock and cancer. So it is vital that we vaccinate our pets only when necessary.
